Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Wet ingredients

  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 1 1/4 cups butternut squash puree
  • 2 eggs eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk (divided)

Optional toppings

  • as needed Coarse sugar (for sprinkling)
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 3-4 tablespoons whole milk (for glaze)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (for glaze)

Instructions 

  • Whisk together dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Mix eggs, squash puree, and half the milk; combine with dry ingredients.
  • Shape dough into circles, cut into wedges, and arrange on baking sheets.
  • Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes; cool on wire rack.
  • Prepare glaze by mixing confectioners' sugar, milk, and cinnamon; drizzle over cooled scones.

Notes

Ensure not to overmix the dough to keep scones tender.
