Ingredients

Flour

  • 2.5 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (sea level)
  • 0.5 cup cake flour (sea level)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder (sea level)
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground clove

Butter

  • 1.5 cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2 cups cane sugar

Eggs

  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)

Almond Extract

  • 2.5 teaspoons pure almond extract (sea level)
  • 1.5 teaspoons orange zest (packed)

Buttermilk

  • 1.5 cups buttermilk (room temperature)

Cream Cheese

  • 8 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)

Heavy Whipping Cream

  • 1.5 cups heavy whipping cream (cold)
  • 0.33 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure almond extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground clove

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour the cake pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients: flours, baking powder, salt, and ground clove.
  • Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in almond extract and orange zest.
  • Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  • Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
  • Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and almond extract until stiff peaks form. Frost the cooled cake.
